This lot consists of a pastel illustration on paper, done in the soft, tasteful style of Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). A faint, impartial signature can vaguely be seen at lower right corner. This delightful, sketched image depicts a nautical scene. An outstanding Impressionist highlight for any collection. Overall unframed measurements are approximately 7" x 9.75".

Both the front and the reverse sides of this piece feature stamps which read, "Atelier [Studio] de Ed. Degas".

Edgar Degas (French, 1834 - 1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially associated with the subject of the theatre; more than half of his works depict ballet dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, Degas rejected the term, preferring to be called a Realist. He was a superb draftsman and particularly masterly in depicting movement, which can clearly be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects, and anatomical studies. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
