Charles Dickens Superb Signed Check and Rare Cabinet Card Photo
1p, measuring 7.5" x 3.75", London, dated October 18, 1867. Messrs Coutts & Company, Check No. 03575, payable to "Scott" for £5.00. Boldly signed "Charles Dickens" in blue ink. Embossed revenue stamp at the right margin. With bank's pen cancellation marks; these do not affect the signature in any way. Flattened folds, light edge toning, and minor spots of soiling.
Accompanied by a rare Charles Dickens Cabinet Card, measuring 4.125" x 6.375", New York, no date [circa 1867]. An attractive portrait of the great English novelist, seated at a writing desk. With a Gurney, New York backstamp on verso, bearing the motto: "I have chained the sun to serve me." Light toning and edge soiling. Minor foxing and imperfections. Very good.
Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1895) was a celebrity photographer, operating in New York. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was a Victorian novelist and social critic, responsible for creating some of the best-known and loved characters in literature.
