Joseph Lister Excellent ALS
LISTER, JOSEPH. Autograph Letter Signed, "Lister", 1 p., 8 vo., on black bordered mourning stationery, London, April 1, 1898.
Lister writes to Sir Archibald [Geikie], in full, "The Italian Ambassador is about to leave England early in May; and he has agreed to be my guest at the Athenaeum on Friday the 29th inst. (8 o'clock).
It would give me much pleasure if you could join us."
Sir Joseph Lister (1827-1912) was a British surgeon and medical scientist who was the founder of antiseptic medicine and a pioneer in preventive medicine. While his method, based on the use of antiseptics, is no longer employed, his principle, that bacteria must never gain entry to an operation wound, remains the basis of surgery to this day. He was made a baronet in 1883 and raised to the peerage in 1897.
Sir Archibald Geikie (1835-1924) was a Scottish geologist and writer.
