Joseph McCarthy Rare Signed Photograph and Typed Letter Signed

The letter is 1p, measuring 8" x 10.5", Washington, D.C., dated June 12, 1956. Boldly signed "Joe McCarthy" and addressed to James Hawley Curtis Austin on U.S. Senate letterhead. McCarthy thanks Austin for an invitation to Graduation Exercises but regretfully writes, "…my schedule yesterday afternoon was such that it was impossible for us to make it." With flattened folds and spots of soiling. Boldly signed by McCarthy.

Accompanied by a great black and white photograph of a younger-looking McCarthy, measuring 10.25" x 8", no place, no date. Inscribed and signed in brown ink, "To Jim & Dorothy With Best Wishes. Joe." McCarthy is pictured in a suit and tie, holding a WHBY Radio microphone. With light corner wear to the photograph.

Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957) was a Wisconsin Senator, famous (or infamous) for being the public face and driving force of Cold War tensions fueled by fear of the spread of communism. His practices and allegations against people in government, universities, and Hollywood came to be known as "McCarthyism" and ultimately led to his censure by the Senate on December 2, 1954, for behavior that was "contrary to senatorial traditions."
