**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, Japan, ca. 19th century CE. A polychrome woodblock print of the Ukiyo-e (pictures of the floating world) style of the Edo period featuring a courting scene in which a seated male suitor dressed in refined garb leans over to present a gift of red poppy flowers to the female who peeks out from behind a pair of partially opened bamboo doors. The print also presents calligraphic texts at the upper right corner and a signature at the lower left. This period is known for marvelous woodblock prints of female beauties, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, and courtesans of the infamous pleasure districts. In time the repertoire expanded to include romantic landscapes, flora and fauna, and dramatic historical events. This piece presents the characteristic birds-eye view, penchant for strong line, and appreciation for brilliant, saturated hues that are hallmarks of this fine Japanese artform. By the 18th century, the first polychrome prints or nishiki-e like this example were commissioned for wealthy patrons of the Edo period. Works like this one played a major role in the West's perception of Japanese visual culture during the late 19th century when Japonism exerted a powerful influence on French Impressionists such as Degas, Manet, and Monet, Post-Impressionists including Van Gogh, even pioneering Art Nouveau artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec. Size: print itself measures ~ 12.5" L x 8.5" W (31.8 cm x 21.6 cm); framed and matted 17.5" L x 13.625" W (44.4 cm x 34.6 cm)
Provenance: private Himrod Collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
