**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, southwestern Argentina or south-central Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. An attractive Mapuche pipe, hand-carved from a single piece of volcanic stone and enveloped in a lovely shade of taupe. Boasting a lovely smooth surface, this ancient vessel presents with a narrow, tubular mouthpiece and flat, rectangular body that is corseted just before its raised circular rim. The end of the pipe is incised with two vertical striations, while its body is intricately adorned with a lattice motif and triangular design along the top of its body and the sides of its rim. Pipes like this one also seem to have been favored gifts given between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and styles made in different regions have been found far from their origins. Size: 3.625" L x 1" W x 1" H (9.2 cm x 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Bettina Schwimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, collected from 1955-2006
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
