Description
DESCRIPTION: (2 Pc) Two framed intaglios depicting scenes from Greek Mythology. Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754 - 1833), the nephew of the last King of Poland, commissioned about 2500 gems in the neoclassical style by a group of gem engravers in Rome. After his death, Poniatowski collection was offered for sale as ancient gems by Christie's in London in 1839. Once it was discovered the gems were not ancient, the sale was unsuccessful, however John Tyrrell acquired over 1000 gems and had numerous plasters made. He published his collection in 1841, in a catalogue written by James Prendeville. These intaglios bear John Tyrell's signature and mark.
