Description
One side has a splendit map of Boston, while the other shows an excellent view of New England with focus of its Railroads and Telegraph lines. The Boston map shows the city before part of the Receiving Basin was filled to create Commonwealth Avenue and Back Bay neighborhood. A large inset depicts a "Plan of East Boston." Streets, bridges, piers, and railroads are named and wards are numbered. The map is very finely engraved, and has a reference locating 24 important places. The other side is an excellent map of New England showing its emerging railroad system centered in Boston as of 1849 (dated on map). The index references 70 rail roads and also show the telegraph lines.
