Description
Sheraton circa 1830-40, two piece with bookcase/desk top with wide cove molded crest, over two blind double paneled doors, with original brass lock, opening to four graduated shelves, over fall front desk compartment with five dovetailed drawers (1 locking with key; central hidden & lacking brass knobs) over four cubby holes on each side and central open well, all with scroll cut-out molding at tops. Base with long dovetailed drawer with turned cherry knobs, and turned legs, poplar secondary wood, 47 1/2 x 26 1/4 x 81" high. This piece has two manuscript notes which read: This desk came out of this house in Batavia (saloon). Dear Owner I Thought you would be interested in the above picture of 187 East Main. My Great Grandfather Charles (Karl) Hoerner built the home, resided in it with his family and ran a saloon downstairs. Looks like barrels of whiskey being delivered. My Grandmother is one of the little girls standing on the left. I don't know when the picture was taken-Other than long ago. Hope you enjoy Pam (Grace) Bauley. The 2nd note reads:Desk bought from Stella Gene Laughler Batavia, O. Belonged to Mrs. Jean Laughler, Genes Aunt. Condition interior lock to drawer added circa 1900, back board to base has been burned, but not visible when against wall, as it should be, else Fine.
