Description
A carved wooden phallic effigy with encrusted surface suggesting ritual use as a magic shrine object, which received sacrificial offerings. The Dagari are relatives of the Lobi, who live in the south-west of Burkina Faso and in the north-west of Ghana. Their significant ancestor sculptures, known as ‘kpin sebla’, were set up in hidden places or in shrines, and were only allowed to be seen by initiates. Dagara / Dagari peoples, Ghana, Africa. This wood sculpture measures 23.5 inches tall on custom display stand. Provenance: A private Pennsylvania collection.
