Description
Two views of the Russian Siberian town of Beresow (today Beryozovo)—"from the south side" and "between the Menshikov Church and the cathedral"—on a single page from Prevost d'Exiles' influential collection of travel narratives, Histoire Generale des Voyages. The town by the Severnaya Sosva River was a place of exile for out-of-favor courtiers and dissidents from the early 18th century to the end of the Romanov dynasty in the early 20th century. Beryozovo was also the stop on French astronomer Joseph-Nicolas Delisle's Siberian expedition where he hoped to witness the transit of Mercury in 1740, but was foiled by cloudy weather.
