Description
18th c. Portrait Oil Painting MADONNA DELLA ROSA (Madonna of the Rose) After Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (Italian, 1483-1520) (possibly assisted by Giulio Romano) | Oil on Canvas | Depicting the Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist | Exhibited in an antique black and gold gilt gesso wood frame | Approx. Dimensions: Image: 24.02" H x 19.7" W (61 H x 50 W cm); Frame: 30" H x 25.6" W (76 H x 65 W cm) | Provenance: From a Private Collection, Barcelona, Spain | The Madonna of the Rose (Madonna della rosa) is a 1518-1520 painting, now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Its attribution as by Raphael is uncertain, and the involvement of Giulio Romano cannot be excluded. 'The inscription, which translated from Latin means Lamb of God, refers to the Passion of Christ, who gave himself as a sacrifice, as was done in Judaism with lambs, to save men from sin. The composition of the scene derives from the lost Virgin of the Spindles by Leonardo da Vinci, showing that the influence of this artist will remain in Raphael's production until his last works. This painting is also known as The Holy Family of the Rose.' Translated from Spanish.
