Signed with the artist designed naming key signet (intaglio-printed in gold ink) in lower margin, center. Print #71 from the edition of 300 [of which all were printed/issued?]. Chine colle on heavy cream wove paper. Full margins, deckle edges. Very fine, well-inked impression. Very good condition. Provenance: E. Weyhe, New York City. Note a recent sale at $20,400 of a single print ("Water Serpents I") from this portfolio at Treadway/Toomey Galleries, 3/8/2009, lot 638, presale estimate $15,000/20,000. Images from this portfolio, printed during Klimt's lifetime, are very scarce. A complete set/portfolio of "Das Werk Gustav Klimts" contains 50 images. Issued unbound, they were divided into five groups of ten, each group including two multicolored images. Groups were published separately over a period of six years, and sold only by subscription through the publisher, H.O. Miethke. Because Klimt personally supervised the project and insisted on the proper resolution of technical issues, the entire 50 image portfolio, undertaken by early 1908, was not completed until 1914. Another portfolio of Klimt's images was published in 1931, well after his death, and includes some of the same images as in the 1908-1914 portfolio, the prints from our example, the earlier portfolio, being far superior to the later.
