AN ANTIQUE CHINESE PARCEL GILT AND CARVED WOOD FIGURE OF A SEATED BUDDHA, POSSIBLY MING DYNASTY (1368-1644), with downcast eyes and slightly smiling serene expression flanked by long pendulous ears, surmounted by a domed hairstyle centering a diadem beneath a stylized chignon, seated in dhyana asana with hands in various mudras and wearing an elbow-length shawl draped over loose robes open at the chest and falling in folds over the knees, verso hand-hewn rectangular open compartment. In normal antique condition for Chinese carved wood figures of this age, use and materials including but not limited to expected craquelure and considerable dark surface buildup from candle smoke and environment, gilding wear, flaking, normal chips and scratches, some fingertip losses, one thumb is partially missing, large age cracks due to drying and shrinking of the wood, old restorations, and remnants of old crackled honey colored animal glue in areas.
