Southeast Asia, Cambodia, ca. 18th century CE. A beautiful seal of an ovoid form, hand-carved from a fragment of agate boasting mottled red and green hues. The seal has a planar base, lightly slanted walls, and a flat obverse face displaying an intricately-incised image of an Apsara, (translates as nymph, fairy, or celestial maiden), a female spirit who is associated with the clouds and the waters below. She stands with a nude upper body and a knee-length skirt and holds a set of musical instruments in her hands, and her face exhibits slender eyes, a bulbous nose, and tall ears beneath a rounded headdress. Size: 1" L x 0.7" W (2.5 cm x 1.8 cm).
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired at auction in 2004
