Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
North American, United States, Floyd County, Indiana, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 BCE. A grey and black banded slate bannerstone, a weight for an atlatl. The stone has been carved to be triangular in cross section, with a wide, round groove drilled through its center, allowing to it be attached onto a circular piece of wood that formed part of an atlatl. The weight gave the atlatl greater power and control. Bannerstones were not just functional, but also probably had ritualistic or symbolic power, and this one may have served as a talisman to protect the hunter during the dangerous business of the hunt.
