Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tetela and/or Onga peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A large iron gong with a teardrop shape that corsets in at the center. A hook extends out of the top for attachment. Twelve raised dots are on either side near the lower end, which flares outward to reveal an opening. Gongs like this one served as ritual currency and symbols of authority for chiefs and judges, and were given in exchange for goods during marriage ceremonies. Size: 7.4" W x 19.3" H (18.8 cm x 49 cm)

Rich iron patina on all surfaces. Small tears in the iron near the widest end, but overall in good condition.
