Description
**Originally Listed At $1400**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, probably East Sepik Province and Kambot people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A pair of paintings made using earth-based pigments on large, flat slabs of bark, beautiful examples of a traditional art form. The painting on both is highly abstract but each seems to depict a mask-like face being consumed either by the wide mouth of a fish or the bright yellow beak of a bird. On the larger panel there are also two bearded human faces in oval frames near the base. Bright red, yellow, white, blue, and black pigment create a rich appearance on each. Size of largest: 36" W x 58.5" H (91.4 cm x 148.6 cm)
Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

Condition
Wear to pigment commensurate with age, including some small areas of water staining. Some losses to the peripheries, notably on the upper right of the larger panel, which also has a small puncture on its upper left. The pigment is fragile as it is not applied with any oil or water but is directly on the bark surface.
