Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $75**

Louis Leopold Boilly (French, 1761-1845). "Consultation de Medecins 1760", ca. mid 1820s. Lithograph in colors. A wonderful French caricature that presents a group of five bumbling, elderly doctors. Double matted and framed under glass. On the verso, revealed through a window cut into the gallery paper is a brief description handwritten in brown ink, "This was done by L. Boilly - a series of lithographs done between 1824 and 1827. This is of the first edition by Delpach (lithographer) - "The Doctor is in Consultation" is one of the most well known of this series of 84 pictures - hand colored." Size: visible image measures 8" L x 10.5" W (20.3 cm x 26.7 cm)

According to a University of Virginia "Historical Collections at the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library" essay entitled, "French Caricature: Medical Caricatures or Political Commentary?": "Depicting either inept or helpless doctors was a common subject for caricaturists. But sometimes, medical caricatures in the early nineteenth century held another layer of meaning. A print might on the surface poke fun at doctors busily consulting with each other while neglecting their patient in the background, but it could also be a medium for the artist to convey a political message about a suffering country being mismanaged by ineffective rule. The use of medical consultations in caricatures was not restricted to any particular political side, but was used by both French royalists and anti-royalists."
