  • BACKSTORY: The dissection of Art nude photography and the so-called Pinup nude are in fact singular genre's of fine-art photography which depict the nude human body with an emphasis on form, composition, emotional content, and other aesthetic qualities. The nude has been a prominent subject of photography since its invention in France in 1839, and played an important role in establishing photography as a fine art medium. The distinction between fine art photography and other subgenres is not absolute, but there are certain defining characteristics. Ancient Greeks were unashamed by modern standards in acceptance of the nude figure. The competitors of the original Olympics were nude athletes, and there are many examples of Hellenic Godesses. The Greek Gods had a tendency to interact with mortals in their lore. Depictions of historical and contemporary nude figures call for a degree of audience perception, participation and scholarship. After being a preoccupation of ancient Greek art, the figure in art experienced a semi-dormant period in the Middle Ages, then returned to a central position with the Renaissance.

In Pompeii and the Roman world, erotic art was woven into the fabric of everyday life. Figure nudes or sexual depictions were found in public marketplaces, murals and sculptures. Once Christianity became the official religion of the state under Emperor Constantine in the Fourth Century, what was labeled as 'pagan' imagry was banished and driven underground, yet served at contrary purpose to hideous murders exacted during mass undertakings at the behest of the church historically such as The Crusades. Once surveyed in their most vaulted heirarchy, neither art photographs, nor figure paintings may serve as a "false prophet" (so to speak) for any journalistic, scientific or other practical purpose beneath the vision itself. The distinction between these is not always clear, and photographers, as with other artists, exact their own vision..not as justification, but to characterize the work though the eye of the artist 'first' and that of the viewer secondarily. The nude form remains a controversial subject in all media, but more so with photography due to its inherent realism and immediacy. From mankind's prehistorical origins to the contested values of contemporary civilization, nude female figures are generally understood to be symbols of fertility. {Credits: Wikipedia, Kevin Freeman and ArtFaire.us}.
