New York: George H. Doran Company, (1921). First American edition. 8vo. 221 pp. Inscribed: "Robert C. Benchley/1425 B'way" in pencil on rear free endpaper. Original green cloth stamped in black, rear joint split, cocked; top and bottom edges trimmed, fore-edge untrimmed; front free endpaper excised, front hinge starting, rear hinge split; some light scattered foxing; dust-jacket wanting. 1425 Broadway was the home of Robert Benchley and Dorothy Parker's shared office, on the 3rd floor of the Metropolitan Opera House Studios.

New York: George H. Doran Company, (1925 but 1927). First American edition. 8vo. 177 pp. Inscribed: "Benchley" in pencil on front free endpaper in Robert's wife Gertrude's hand. Original stiff mustard wrappers, spine a little darkened; top edge trimmed, other edges untrimmed; "A souvenir of the New York premiere/with the compliments of the/producer and the publisher" printed on upper wrapper. Stott A36b

This special edition of The Letter would have been presented to Robert Benchley at the September 26, 1927 premiere at New York's Morosco Theatre. Benchley reviewed the play in the October 13, 1927 issue of Life magazine.

Benchley reviewed a large number of Maugham's plays in both Life and The New Yorker.
