Description
Incredible piece of diving history! This is an original Draeger model 138 oxygen rebreather in wonderful original condition. This is the very same type used by both Hans & Lotte Hass in the 1940s. Please refer to 3 period photos of the rebreather in action. This model was developed in 1942 as Hans Hass was planning an expedition in the tropics. Due to World War 2, the expedition had to be carried out in the Aegean Sea. Hass wanted the combination of a self contained breather apparatus along with easy to use mask and fins. Hass worked with Draeger and developed the Draeger-Gegenlunge. After some modifications, the result was this model 138. Hass would stop using his small goggles and switch to a diving mask that also covered his nose. With the inclusion of the fins, he had essentially developed the SCUBA system! Hans & Lotte would use this equipment from 1942 onwards. As can be seen in the photos, the rebreather itself is in very presentable condition. Draeger stamp with the numbers 38-345 is clearly visible. All the hardware is original Draeger and in original condition as well. The rubber hose and mouthpiece are not hooked up in the photos, but the fittings are present and in excellent condition. Really an important piece of scuba diving history that would look great on display in a public or private museum.
