Description
This is an excellent map of today's Venezuela, Gayana, Suriname, French Guiana and northern Brazil. The map extends from Lake Maracaibo to the mouth of the Amazon River, and focuses on topographical detail and watershed. This may be one of the last maps to show the fabled imaginary Lake Parima, which had mostly disappeared from maps in the late 18th century and was officially disproved by A. von Humboldt's expedition through Latin America from 1799-1804. Hundreds of spurious rivers fill the region southwest of Venezuela. Names of many indegenous peoples are shown. Other details include towns, cities, etc. From Thomson's New General Atlas.
