Description
Nizhnevolzhskoye Krayevoye Tovarishestvo Roznichnoy Torgovli "Laryok" 25% pribili idet na uluchsheniye zhizni besprizornykh detei [Low Volga Region Joint Venture "Stall" 25% Of Profits Goes to Improve the Life of Homeless Children]. A poster by an anonymous artist, printed at GubPoligrafprom, Saratov, 1922, 97 x 67 cm.
A poster announcing the formation of the regional Trust for Small Retail Trade. The citizenry is implored to support the newly formed company that gave a quarter of its profit to the Commission for Protection of Children and also promised to give homeless children a chance to earn a living by hawking its wares. Laryok operated from 1922 to 1928, before being merged into a larger state-owned entity.
The high artistic quality of the design is not surprising, given the historic role of Saratov as a major arts center associated with the names of Borisov-Musatov, Kuznetsov, Petrov-Vodkin, and many other prominent artists. The poster came to us with the (unverified) story that it was designed pro-bono by the students of the Practical Arts Institute (the former Bogolyubov Art School).
