Item Details
Description

Unique piece of dance music history and in excellent condition, this is a 1976 Capitol Records label award (i.e. non-RIAA) commemorating the sale of two million copies of The Sylvers "Boogie Fever".

The track hit #1 in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and also in Canada. The nine members of The Sylvers, a family group so named after their surname "Sylver," had two #1 records with this track and "Hot Line". While this is not an RIAA award, the track was certified Gold (for 500,000 in U.S. sales) by the RIAA on April 20, 1976. The two million in sales that Capitol touted with this award, while not documented publicly, is certainly likely to be accurate when adding in sales outside the U.S.

Item Highlights:

  • 1976 Capitol Records in-house gold record award for 2 million in sales of The Sylvers "Boogie Fever" (Note: Not an RIAA award)
  • Platinum disc, black and silver frame
  • In excellent condition with components, construction and condition are consistent with it being 44 years old
  • Plate reads: "Presented to Bob Levinson to commemorate the sale of over two million copies of the Capitol Records single 'Boogie Fever' "
  • In VG to Excellent condition with brilliantly shiny platinum record and bright, crisp label, a couple of minor few chips/mars on the frame and a couple of small perforations on the backing paper
  • Award measures approx.11" x 14"
  • Great historic collectors item

This award is in excellent condition, despite its 44-year age. Although it has a minor mar or two on the frame it was obviously kept well, with a shiny record and the black matte has almost no fading. This award was presented to Bob Levinson, who was a PR executive who worked with major labels.

The award appears to have an original back and manufacturer sticker, complete with no-area-code Los Angeles phone number.

Notes on the condition of all vintage record awards like this one: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.

As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.
