Third Reich Germania Watercolor Architectural Painting
Third Reich Germania Watercolor Architectural Painting
Item Details
Description
This Third Reich Watercolor Architectural Painting of a proposed "Germania" building (we think) was purchased locally from the widow of a deceased collector. She was told this was rolled up and brought home by a US Veteran and that is was taken from a government building somewhere in Germany. The art is in a modern frame and covered in museum glass. It's quite large, measuring 44.5 inches x 26 inches. The art itself is 37" x 18". The frame job alone was probably hundreds of dollars. There is some water staining and some holes that have been repaired, a good indication that this was in fact taken off of a wall, rolled up and brought home by a vet. From Wikipedia ; Germania was the projected renewal of the German capital Berlin during the Nazi period, part of Adolf Hitler's vision for the future of Nazi Germany after the planned victory in World War II. Albert Speer, the "first architect of the Third Reich", produced many of the plans for the rebuilt city in his capacity as overseer of the project, only a small portion of which was realized between the years 1938 and 1943 when construction took place. Some of the projects were completed, such as the creation of a great East–West city axis, which included broadening Charlottenburger Chaussee (today Straße des 17. Juni) and placing the Berlin Victory Column in the centre, far away from the Reichstag, where it originally stood. Others, however, such as the creation of the Grosse Halle (Great Hall), had to be shelved owing to the beginning of war. A great number of the old buildings in many of the planned construction areas were, however, demolished before the war, and eventually defeat stopped the plans.Due to size and value, we advise any winning bidder to consider having us remove the glass prior to shipping to avoid breakage and damage to the art. We will leave this up to the buyer.
