AUTOMOTIVE WRISTWATCHESFrom a private, automotive themed watch collection.Lincoln steering wheel by Old England. Circa 1968-1970. Swiss Made, Mechanical - manual wind. A very rare timepiece in the Old England steering wheel series; only very few featured gold plated cases. The entire case except for the stainless back is gold plated. This is one of the rarest of Old England watches. Fitted with original black Tropic Sport strap. The watch has been serviced and has a new replaced second hand. Overall condition indicates that this watch was never, or barely worn. Outer diameter of rim measures 39mm. This watch comes supplied in a new wood watch box. About Old England brand ‘Steering Wheel wristwatches. Circa 1960s to no later than 1972. Old England was, as one wold assume, a British company - but now long out of business. All the movements are mechanical, Swiss made, simple 1 Jewel, and manual wind. Cases are all metal with stainless steel backs, all have luminous hands including a sweep second hand. Note that due to age, the luminous paint on the hands do not hold much if any light now.‘Steering Wheel wristwatches were originally fitted with Tropic Sport brand rubber sport straps, which are now difficult to find, and often cost more than a good leather watch strap. The straps were black or white, this varied. It is common for the original watch straps to have been replaced.The outer steering rims of the cases are metal as are the spokes. The rims came three ways: With a black powder coating or all chrome including the case. Both the Black and Chrome rims had chrome spokes. And.... some exceptionally rare ones were all gold plated; rim and spokes. The rims and cases were always the same dimensions.Old England Steering Wheel watches were originally sold through automobile dealerships, racing organizations, and other automotive groups. Some watches were produced specifically for various automobile sales and racing promotions. Some of these watches were given out as special awards and promotions.The Old England watches are great pieces of both automotive, and horological history. They are of course rare - very difficult to find due to so very many having been abused, and not survived.
