Description
SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, six alphabet and numeral rows, below signed and dated "Fanny Redfields sampler / Wrought Springfield August / 21 1820 Aged 11 Years". Housed under glass in a 19th century paint-decorated frame. Dated 1820. 10 1/2" x 8" sight, 12" x 9 3/4" OA.
Very good visual condition with light toning, a few scattered stains, a few holes, some fading and fugitive color to thread, scattered small losses to thread, frame with wear, scratches, flakes, and chips. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: From the James Dunn collection, Springfield, VT.
Catalogue Note: Possibly identified as Frances Redfield born April 12, 1809 in North Springfield, Windsor Co., Vermont to parents Roswell Redfield and Betsey Belknap. Frances had six siblings and was an eighth generation descendant of John Alden, a crew member on the 1620 voyage of the Mayflower to Plymouth Colony. She married John Newton in April of 1829, and her death date is unknown.
