7 volumes, 8vo (234 x 154 mm). Vol.I-II, Nos.1-50 and Vol.IV-VIII, Nos.77-200 (lacking Vol.III, Nos.51-76). (Title-page lacking in Vol.IV.) Volumes I-II: 20th century half maroon morocco gilt stamp-signed by G.S., edges marbled; Volumes IV-VIII: contemporary half black calf gilt (some overall wear to all volumes).
FIRST APPEARANCES of A Tale of Two Cities (nos.1-31) and Great Expectations (nos.84-119) in serialized form. A Tale of Two Cities had first appeared in the weekly journal All the Year Round from 30 April to 26 November 1859. All the Year Round was considered a replacement or continuation of Household Words, which had ceased publication in 1857. Vol.I-II and IV-VIII of All the Year Round contain many other pieces by Dickens including several sketches which afterwards appeared in book form as The Uncommercial Traveller.
