Item Details
Description
One of the most beautiful and historically important, early plans of New York City, here in a fine 1855 edition by G. Hayward. Nice example of the scarce Valentine's Manual edition of Montressor's early map of Manhattan. This plan of New York is the first large scale plan of the city, predating the John Ratzer plan by one year. Earlier plans issued by Bellin in 1764 and Maerschalck were on a much smaller scale. The city is seen here as it was in the years leading up to the American Revolution, when its developed streets reached only as far as just north of today’s Canal Street. The country homes of the city’s commercial elite and their owners are named on the plan. Also depicted are a ten-acre lake called The Fresh Water or Collect Pond as well as numerous streams, rivers, marshes and forest. Greenwich Village is shown as an actual village in the northernmost part of the plan. Within the street plan is King's, later Columbia College, shown here for the first time on a map. The legend below the map indicates the location of the city's first synagogue (on Mill Street) and on the plan itself the "Jew's Burying Gr." is noted. Includes large inset of New York Harbor, complete with soundings. Montressor was the chief English engineer in America. He began his survey of the town in December 1765, at a time when the Stamp Act was spurring the creation of the Sons of Liberty and pushing the Colonists toward Revolution. The work quality was hurried and not terribly accurate, owing in part to the local hostilities. Legend at bottom left reads, “Engraved from the original map by John Montresor for D. T. Valentine’s Manual for 1855 by G. Hayward.” A very large and difficult map to come by. Repair to upper left corner. Re-margined at left side. 19.125 x 23.75.
