"This poster and programs are extremely rare and are one of the oldest Charlie Chaplin posters to ever come on the market. They are from one of Charlie Chaplin's last-ever appearances in vaudeville.

They are made even rarer by the inclusion of another member of the cast, named Stanley Jefferson. Less than two years later, Jefferson changed his name to Stan Laurel, yes, THEE Stan Laurel of "Laurel & Hardy".

So, to find these two giants of film comedy learning their craft, together, on the vaudeville stage, is what makes these items so special".

This is a great broadside for the Empress Theatre in San Diego, CA and the main act from the Fred Karno's London Comedy Company and was called "The Wow Wows" which featured a little known in American comedy, Charles Chaplin.

The Wow Wows was a 29-minute show, performed in three scenes. The premise being Chaplin's character was told he would be initiated in a secret society, when in fact, they were getting revenge on him. The comedy debuted in 1910 in New York.

Included are some small playbills for "The Wow Wows" that have some great advertising for the San Diego area.

Fred Karno was an actor and comedian in his own right before Charles Chaplin joined the Karno's at the age of 19. But Charles quickly learned the art of physical comedy and his main goal was to become a household name in America.

Charles toured the US with the KarnoÂ’s from 1910-1913.

In 1910, Stan was discovered by Karno, but by this time, Chaplin was already the company's principal comedian.

In 1913, Mack Sennett (Keystone Cops) contacted the tour because he needed to replace the lead cop and requested Chaplin (who he incorrectly called him Chaffin). In his first starring role, Charles Chaplin introduced us to the "Little Tramp" and the rest is Hollywood history.
