Description
Two letters signed "Simeon" written to his brother.
The first letter is dated July 13, 1854 from Philadelphia, PA. In the letter Simeon talks about visiting their mother in Philadelphia and how he will soon be visiting Spain and Mexico to "wind up all my business" before settling in the American South. He describes wanting to purchase a plantation in Mississippi or Louisiana and give up his busy life as a businessman in the big city. Simeon then announces that he is "now engaged to a young lady of N. York who I met last year in London, and accompanied to Paris. Two months ago I again met her in N. Orleans, made her a tender of my heart and hand, both of which she had the kindness to accept...."
The second letter is dated July 28, 1854 from Washington, D.C. In the letter Simeon writes about a plot against him, although he doesn't specify what the plot is. He writes, "Since my arrival here I have ascertained the existence of a plot to defeat me in my present enterprise. It was got up by the folks at home and all persons here connected with them are afraid to show any signs of favor towards me least it would loose (sic) them their offices...." He also includes a message to his sister Martha expressing his desire to spend more time with her and requesting that she and their other sister Eliza write to him more.
