Exceptional Mother-of-Pearl-Inlaid Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy

second quarter 19th century, English, the bowfront caddy with a cove-molded cover inlaid with a pair of peacocks on branches, flanking scrollwork emulating their open tail feathers, and inlaid trailing flowering vines, the two-compartment interior with tortoiseshell lids over a foil-lined interior.

In overall good condition. Exterior surfaces highly polished over typical small restorations to several corners of the cover and to both rear corners of the base. The bright silver stringing with possible restorations throughout. The inlaid design with very scattered and well-integrated minor restorations to the mother-of-pearl elements. One hinge with a sliver patch (1/8" x 3/4") to the outer edge. The claret velvet lining on the cover interior pulling away slightly at the sides. Interior banding on the cover and box exhibits scattered dings to the edges and areas of yellowing with scattered small cracks and a patch (approx. 2") at the hinge mentioned previously. The compartments retain remnants of the original metal lining. Covers well-fitted. The locking mechanism marked with two crowns flanking "PATENT" and is in working condition. The box underside retains remnants of a paper covering. The feet are replaced, but well-suited.
