Description
1870 1ed General McCracken PROVENANCE Blockade Phalsburg French Empire Napoleon
Émile Erckmann was a French writer, associated with the region of Alsace-Lorraine. Most his works were written with Alexandre Chatrian. In August 1870, Erckmann was at Phalsbourg at the time of Mac-Mahon's defeat and with the Franco-Prussian War, the works of the two lorrains gained popularity by relating to nationalistic desires for revenge and nostalgia for the return of Alsace-Lorraine from Germany to France.
This “Blockade of Phalsburg” is an English printing of Erckmann’s work describing the fall of the first French Empire with information on the invasion of France in 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte, Cossacks, Prussians, and more. This 1870 first edition is illustrated with 25 plates and a decorative blue cloth binding!
Fascinatingly, this copy was a boyhood belonging of the esteemed British military commander, Lt. Gen. Sir Frederick William Nicholas McCracken, KCB, DSO and may have influenced his, then future, military career.
