Description
Original antique war Ukiyo e poster - After sharp fighting the Rurik was sunk and the two others were seriously damaged by our (Japanese) Second Squadrons. The poster depicts the naval battle of Ulsan on 14 August 1904 between cruiser squadrons of the Imperial Russian Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). The poster features a painting depicting a dark stormy sea with Japanese boats with Imperial War flags shining light on the sinking armoured cruiser Rurik engulfed in smoke, with explosions and smoke in the background. The Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan fought the Russo-Japanese War during 1904 and 1905 over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of military operations were the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria, and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. The complete victory of the Japanese military surprised international observers and transformed the balance of power in both East Asia and Eastern Europe, resulting in Japan's emergence as a great power and Russia's decline in prestige and influence in Eastern Europe. The loss of life without victory and the humiliating defeat for the Russian Empire contributed to growing domestic unrest which culminated in the 1905 Russian Revolution and accelerated the disintegration of the Russian autocracy. Fair condition, creasing, staining, tears, foxing, small paper loss on bottom margin. Country of issue: Japan, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 47x64, year of printing: 1904
