The South African Chamber of Mines first introduced the concept of the Krugerrand in the 1960s to promote physical gold as an investment opportunity for the "man on the street." However the name of the coin partially comes from the “Rand ” the name of the South African currency. The other side features the first and only president of the nation Paul Kruger. The Krugerrand was mass-produced so that it could be sold at a relatively low premium over the current gold price. In 1980 the fractional Krugerrands (1/2 oz 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz) were released making the Krugerrand more accessible for more investors.
