Robert Shaw (1859-1912) was born in Wilmington, Delaware and is a self-taught etcher and painter. He is not well known today but during his lifetime he was a well known Delaware artist. He produced a series of etchings for the United States Historical Society depicting important landmarks in America in the early twentieth-century.
He drew and painted in meticulous detail the familiar sights of Delaware, and his works were found in homes, schools, and professional offices. Historians today are grateful for Shaw's accurate renderings, turning to them for pictorial evidence of places and buildings which have either changed or are no longer in existence. However, there is little documentation of Shaw's life and work.
