Signed in ink, inscribed in pencil "2nd Ed 5/50" with red chop stamp in image left.
Edition 50.
Image size 9 1/2 x 12 13/16" (24.0 x 32.6 cm).

Chuzo Tamotzu (1888-1975) was born in Kagoshima, Japan on February 19, 1888. He is a self-taught painter and printmaker who left Japan to further his art studies in Europe. He arrived in the United States in 1920 and settled in New York. He quickly became friends with Philip Evergood, Yasuo Kunijoshi and John Sloan. He served during WWII as a combat sketch artist. In 1947 he was a founding member of New York Artists Equity Association. Tamotzu had been spending time in Santa Fe and had taken over John Sloan's old studio there turning it into his art gallery.

Condition: Good condition, save for staining in the right below signature, remains of old hinges top margin.
