A sealed Mint bag of Morgan silver dollars contained 1,000 coins, from which perhaps 10 to 20 Gem-quality coins might be obtained. Since the majority of bags went into distribution or storage, few bags were actually cherrypicked for pristine examples. Despite more than 8.2 million pieces struck in 1890 at the San Francisco Mint, most Uncirculated examples that survive are bagmarked and fail to achieve even the MS64 or MS65 levels.
