Item Details
Description
***Auction Highlight*** 1864 L Indian Cent 1c Graded ms65+ rd By SEGS. Very scarce 1864 L on ribbon Indian cent variety. According to David Hall, “The 1864-L is scarce in circulated grades and very scarce in mint state. However, its price has as much to do with its popularity and importance to collectors as it does with its scarcity. All 1864-L Indian cents have a pointed bust on Ms. Liberty, while the no L’s have a rounded bust. So sometimes low grades are designated (correctly) as L’s even if you can't really see the L. The vivid color and strong eye appeal seen in this coin are far more prevalent on late date Indian cents than they are on an early bronze issue such as the 1864 L on Ribbon. Satiny surfaces are bathed in a blend of beautiful pinkish-rose and pale orange colors. Both sides are silky smooth in appearance and allow full appreciation of razor sharp striking detail. The L on Ribbon represents a redesign of the basic Indian cent motif by James Barton Longacre, who added his initial L to the lower ribbon between the last feather in the headdress and the adjacent hair curl. Numismatic scholars do not know either when the L on Ribbon type was placed into production or exactly how many pieces were produced. The total circulation strike mintage of 1864 bronze cents is 39,233,714 pieces, with Rick Snow (2014) providing an estimated mintage of 5 million coins for this variety given the scarcity of examples relative to those of its No L counterpart. With most survivors well worn and the typical uncirculated example grading no finer than MS-64 RB this full Red Gem+ represents an important bidding opportunity for the quality conscious Indian cent enthusiast. Lovely! A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
