Description
VINTAGE SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BROOCH, GEORGE WEIL, 1970S of textured design, modelled as an abstract flower, set with brilliant-cut diamonds and marquise-shaped sapphires, measuring 42 x 39mm, signed G.Weill, stamped 18ct and PLAT, estimated total diamond weight 1.20-1.40 carats, gross weight 28.8 grams. George Weil was born in 1938, to a Jewish family based in Antwerp. As the war approached, they fled (on the last possible flight) to the UK. Weil trained as a jeweller and a portrait sculptor at St Martin’s School of Art. His jewellery designs reflect the abstract, sculptural quality of London around this era, alongside contemporaries such as Andrew Grima. Closing his jewellery gallery in 1979, Weil emigrated to Israel to work as an artist, and examples of his jewellery can now be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
