Hyman G. Rickover (1900-1986) Admiral. Rickover developed the world’s first nuclear-powered engines and the first atomic-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, launched in 1954. He then went on to supervise plans for harnessing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. 8” x 10 ½” typed letter signed, USS Flasher, “At Sea North Atlantic”, May 23, 1066, to Lola Pierotti. “…We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS FLASHER…When all nuclear submarines…are completed, the United States will have a nuclear submarine fleet of forty-one Polaris and fifty-seven attack submarines….”
