Description
Large Civil War photograph mounted on card stock depicting Confederate artillery captured at the Battle of Chattanooga, November 1863. Inscriptions lower left margin, "Captured Guns, Mission Ridge Nov 1863" and lower right corner, "Parked opposite General (?illeg -- Thomas?) Headquarters in Chattanooga. Pencil inscription verso, upper left corner, "C. H. Boyd" and in crayon "Boyd". Photograph - 13 1/4"H x 10 3/4" W. Card stock - 21 1/2"H x 14"W. Provenance: The Estate of Charles Boyd Coleman, Jr., Chattanooga, TN. Descended in the family of Charles Harrold Boyd, who served on General George H. Thomas staff as Captain of the Topographical Engineers, Army of the Cumberland. (Information according to the "Civil War Record of Brown University", 1920). Charles Boyd's wife, Annette Maria Dearborn Boyd, was the daughter of Greenleaf Dearborn (1786-1846) and great granddaughter of Maj. General Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) on her mother's side. She and Charles Harrod Boyd had four children Annie Frances Harrod Boyd, Augusta Dearborn Boyd, Emily Dearborn Boyd, and Julia Wingate Boyd (wife of Lewis M. Coleman, Jr., Chattanooga, TN). Condition
Overall good condition. Minute foxing spots, surface of photo and card stock. Areas of dampstaining, largest 2 1/2", above soldier's head and top left corner of photograph. Areas of toning, largest 4 1/2", top right of card stock. Tears, areas of loss, largest 2" x 1 1/4", to edges of card stock (does not affect photograph).
