John Vanderlyn, Jr. (New York, 1805-1876) oil on canvas three-quarter view portrait painting depicting James F. Wilkes (1835-1868) of Giles County, TN. Signed "Vanderlyn" en verso. Housed in the original carved gilt wood frame. Sight - 27 1/2" H x 21" W. Framed - 35" H x 29" W. Note: James F. Wilkes was born in 1835 in Giles County, Tennessee, the son Minor Winn Wilkes (b. 1785, Virginia) and Mary Brownlow Wilkes (b. 1805, North Carolina). He was married to Cynthia Pearlina Wilkes. Military records show that he was enlisted as a Private in the CSA as a part of the 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Clack's). Condition
Moderate overall alligatoring to surface. Yellow stain or varnish discoloration to sitter's white shirt. Black light reveals 3"L area of inpainting to right of sitter's cheek and neck; minor inpainting to forehead and bridge of nose; and small area to left of sitter's neck and ear. Stretcher creases to left side and top. Moderate scattered white accretions bottom quadrant.
