Description
Three (3) English school girl samplers. 1st-2nd items: Two (2) English school girl samplers, likely students from the same school. Framed in same frame molding. 1st item: Silk on linen alphabet and verse sampler including the verse "O God above to thee I cry Have mercy on me before I die Hear my prayer and give me grace that Heaven may be my resting place". Initialed "SW Aged 9". The lowest section designed with trees, animals, flower baskets, crowns, flower vine and dated 1777. Sight - 12 5/8" H x 9 3/4" W. Framed - 15 5/8" H x 12 3/4"W. 2nd item: Silk on linen alphabet and verse sampler by Elizabeth Wilcox, dated 1776, aged 10, including phrase "Elizabeth Wilcox is my name. England is my nation. Wixford is my dwelling place and Christ is my salvation". The lowest section with similar designs as first sampler but in more muted thread tones and dated 1776. Sight - 12 5/8" H x 9 3/4" W. Framed - 15 5/8" H x 12 3/4"W. Both English, 4th quarter 18th century. 3rd item: English school girl verse needlework sampler by Margaret Cunningham, dated 1818. Silk on linen with two pink floral sprays flanking verse "When all thy mercies o my God My riping soul surveys Transported with the view I'm lost In wonder love and praise". A female figure stands between flowering shrubs with birds and two large flowering trees and a large urn above. All is bordered by attached blue stencilled floral ribbon. Housed in a wormy chestnut frame. Sampler - 11 1/2" H x 10" W. Framed - 15 3/4" H x 13 1/2" W. English, early 19th century. Provenance: Sevier County, TN private collection. Condition
1st item: Overall good condition with minor toning around perimeter. 2nd item: 1/2" x 1/4" loss to linen, lower right edge. General toning to linen and some fading to threads. 3rd item: Scattered staining to fabric. Minor tears to ribbon border.Needlework in overall good condition.
