Description
East Tennessee or Southwest Virginia glazed earthenware pottery jar having extruded handles with thumbprint terminals, flaring rim transitions to an ovoid body with an incised ridge around the upper shoulder and two incised lines under this ridge. Beaded foot, unglazed bottom. Originally fitted with a lid, possibly the Cain pottery of Sullivan County. 7 1/2" H. 3rd Qtr. 19th century. Provenance: Brad Swanson Collection, Abingdon, VA. Note: This jar was exhibited in the "Legacy in Clay: Pottery of Washington County, Virginia" 2005 exhibit, William King Regional Arts Center, Abingdon, VA. Condition
Some chips to the rim, a couple of abrasions to the body. Original lid not present.
