Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

Western Africa, Mali, Dogon people, ca. early 20th century CE. A standing, hand-carved wood figure of a man with his arms raised, a long beard and bald head, protruding belly button, and prominent phallus and testes. He is carved atop an ovoid pedestal. His facial features are simple, with an elongated nose and small mouth; the artist has also carved large ears. There are remains of black pigment over much of the surface. Size: 5.5" W x 23" H (14 cm x 58.4 cm)

The Dogon are well known for their masks and wooden figurative art. A figure like this one may represent an ancestor, whose worship is a major component of Dogon religion.
