Archive of signatures of 20th Century Associate Justices and Chief Justices of the United States Supreme Court, including Earl Warren, Thurgood Marshall. Lot consists of two (2) framed autograph collections, one (1) signed First Day Cover, and one (1) signed Christmas Card. 1st item: Ten (10) Framed Associate Justice/Chief Justice of the Supreme Court cut signatures, including Hugo Lafayette Black (1886-1971), served from 1937 to 1971, cut signature on Supreme County of the United States stationary, dated "1959" in ink. 3 5/8" H x 4 5/8" W; William Joseph Brennan Jr. (1906-1997), served from 1956 to 1990, cut signature. 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; William Orville Douglas (1898-1980), served from 1939 to 1975, cut signature on Supreme Court of the United States stationary reading "Douglas". 3 1/2" H x 4 5/8" W; Charles Evans Hughes Sr. (1862-1948), served from 1910 to 1916, 11th Chief Justice of the United States from 1930 to 1941, cut signature dated May 27, 1927. Later pencil inscription, top left. 1 3/4" H x 3 1/4" W; Joseph Philo Bradley (1813-1892), served from 1870 to 1892, cut signature with ink inscription reading "Asso. Justice of Sup. Ct./U.S.". 1 3/8" H x 4" W; Earl Warren (1891-1974), 14th Chief Justice of the United States from 1953 to 1969, cut signature and ink inscription on Supreme Court of the United States stationary reading "For/Jim R. Osborne/with the best wishes of/Earl Warren". 3 5/8" H x 4 5/8" W; John Marshall Harlan (1833-1911), served from 1877 to 1911, cut signature with illegible ink inscription. Later pencil inscription, top left. 2 3/8" H x 3 3/8" W; John Marshall Harlan II (1899-1971), served from 1955 to 1971, cut signature on Supreme Court of the United States stationary dated April 24, 1970. 3 3/8" H x 4 5/8" W; Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993), served from 1967 to 1991, cut signature. 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; Thomas Campbell Clark (1899-1977), served from 1937 to 1971, cut signature on Supreme Court of the United States stationary with ink inscription reading "Best Wishes to George Cotkin/from/Tom C. Clark". 3 1/2" H x 4 5/8" W. All items float mounted on a green mat and housed under glass in a wooden frame. Sight - 11 7/8" H x 15 3/4" W. Framed - 13 7/8" H x 17 5/8" W. 2nd item: Ten (10) Framed Associate Justice/Chief Justice of the Supreme Court cut signatures, including Arthur Joseph Goldberg (1908-1990), served from 1962 to 1965, cut signature and inscription reading "To Judge J. Osborne/With high/regard and esteem/Arthur J. Goldberg". 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; Abraham "Abe" Fortas (1910-1982), served from 1965 to 1969, cut signature reading "The Fortas". 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; Sherman "Shay" Minton (1890-1965), served from 1949 to 1956, cut signature. 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; Harry Andrew Blackmun (1908-1999), served from 1970 until 1994, cut signature dated July 8, 1970. 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; William Hubbs Rehnquist (1924-2005), served from 1972 to 1986, 16th Chief Justice of the United States from 1986 to 2005, cut signature on Supreme County of the United States stationary. 3 1/2" H x 4 5/8" W; James Francis Byrnes (1882-1972), serving from 1941 to 1942, cut signature. 2 5/8" H x 4 5/8" W; Stanley Forman Reed (1884-1980), served from 1938 to 1957, cut signature. 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; Potter Stewart (1915-1985), served from 1958 to 1981, cut signature on Supreme Court of the United States stationary with dated typed inscription and handwritten signature reading "January, 1979/Dear Judge Osborne:/I am pleased to send you my/autograph for your collection./Sincerely yours,/Potter Stewart". 3 1/2" H x 4 5/8" W; Byron Raymond "Whizzer" White (1917-2002), served from 1962 to 1993, cut signature. 3 1/8" H x 5 1/8" W; Charles Evans Whittaker (1901-1973), served from 1957 to 1962, cut signature and inscription reading "Charles E. Whittaker/Associate Justice of the/Supreme Court of the United/States". 3 3/8" H x 5 5/8" W. All items float mounted on a white mat and housed under glass in a black wooden frame. Sight - 13 3/4" H x 17 5/8" W. Framed - 16 1/8" H x 20" W. 3rd item: Oliver Wendell Holmes (1841-1935), Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932, and as Acting Chief Justice of the United States from January to February 1930, first day of issue cover, dated March 8, 1868, signed by William Orville Douglas, Abraham "Abe" Fortas, Earl Warren, Tom Campbell Clark, and Charles Evans Whittaker. 3 3/4" H x 6 5/8" W. 4th item: Christmas card signed by Earl Warren, depicting Earl, his wife Nina with their children and grandchildren dressed in Santa Claus outfits and holding on to the edge of a chimney with "Top O' The Season" above, their five pets below holding a gift bag reading "and Merry Christmas The Earl Warrens". Encapsulated (not laminated) in an archival plastic sleeve. 15 5/8" H x 6 1/4" W. Provenance: Middle Tennessee collection, acquired from Jim R. Osborne, historian and Judge, Knox Superior Court II, Vincennes, IN. Supporting documentation available on request. Provenance: the collection of Ross Webb, Brentwood, TN.
Condition
1st item: Signatures in overall very good condition. Acid burns from paste or tape to surface of cards (does not affect signatures). Not examined outside of frame. 2nd item: Signatures in overall very good condition. Stains, largest 1/8" to mat, few minute foxing spots to cards (does not affect signatures). Not examined outside of frame. 3rd item: Signatures in overall very good condition. Few ink spots, pencil inscription, en verso. 4th item: Signature and card in overall very good condition.
