Description
Civil War Union letters all dated 1863 and written to various officers including General M.C. Meigs, the Quarter Master General in Washington City, D.C., and Col. Bingham plus others. Subjects include the request from an attorney at law in Louisville, KY of a voucher for a wagon that was taken from "Drew, who is a hard working negro" and a 3 plus page letter to General Meigs discussing the disgraceful conduct of a Union officer in accepting bribes from steamboat owners. (General Meigs is known in history for fighting corruption in the Army). Other letters request the supply of horses; transportation of cotton; overdue payment for horse feed and building materials. Group also includes one notarized statement from Shelby County, Tennesse, July, 1863, stating that the steamboat "Anglo-Saxon" is unsafe for navigation. Sheet sizes: 7-3/4" H x 8-1/8" W to 10-3/8" H x 7-3/4" W. (8 items total)
Condition
Overall good condition with some tears at corners, edge folds, crease and stains on some edges. Some brown paper residue on back of 4 sheets. Some discoloration.
