Description
A Union letter from Samuel McAlavey, Co. H, 27th Regiment Penna. Militia. June 26, 1863. Written only days before the first day's Battle of Gettysburg of July 1. "Marched through Columbia [PA] and encamped…near Rights vill [Wrightsville] in York County...farmers...a fetching there horses in to Columbia for fear the rebels will take them. We were sworen in for the Emergency..." [sic] These raw troops defending the strategically important Wrightsville-Columbia Bridge managed to repel the advance guard of Lee's army, burning the bridge in the process, days before the Battle of Gettysburg .
